Lauper's music career took off with her first solo album. It was released in 1983 and called *She's So Unusual*. This album was a huge success for a new female artist. It had four songs that reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. These songs were "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "Time After Time," "She Bop," and "All Through the Night." She even changed the lyrics to "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" to make it an anthem for women.

Her journey to stardom had some very difficult moments. She grew up in New York City and began playing guitar at age 12. Before she was a solo star, she was in a band called Blue Angel. That band released one album in 1980, but it did not sell well. After the band broke up, Lauper faced many money problems. She even worked in retail stores and as a waitress to get by. She also dealt with a cyst on her vocal cord that made her lose her voice for a while.

Lauper has won many of the most important awards in entertainment. In 1985, she won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. She also won a Tony Award in 2013 for her work on the musical *Kinky Boots*. She was the first woman to win that specific Tony Award by herself. Her music has also won awards from MTV and Billboard. She even has her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
