The musical features music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper. The book, which is the written script, was authored by Harvey Fierstein. This stage adaptation is based on a 2005 British film. That film was originally inspired by a 1999 episode of the BBC2 documentary series, Trouble at the Top. The story explores themes of community and the universal bond between fathers and sons. It uses these connections to examine tolerance and self-acceptance.

The narrative follows Charlie Price, a fourth-generation heir to a shoe manufacturing company. His family business, Price & Son, is located in Northampton. After his father dies, Charlie discovers the factory is facing bankruptcy. The existing products are high quality but lack style and affordability. While attempting to manage the crisis, Charlie meets Lola, a cabaret performer and drag queen.

Lola performs with a troupe of backup dancers called "angels." Charlie notices that the high-heeled boots used in drag performances are unreliable. They are not designed to support a man's weight. To save the factory, Charlie and Lola form a partnership to design a new line of sturdy, high-heeled boots for men.

The creative process for the musical involved several distinct stages of development. Producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig began discussions after seeing the film at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. Roth felt the film possessed significant "heart and soul." The team eventually hired Jerry Mitchell to handle both direction and choreography. Fierstein and Lauper joined the team to provide the story and music. Lauper joined the creative team in June 2010. The production underwent a reading in October 2011 and a workshop in January 2012.

Musical theater creation requires a blend of different artistic disciplines. Lauper drew inspiration from various musical styles for her score. She looked to classic musicals like South Pacific and West Side Story. She also drew from the work of composer Aaron Copland. Her pop influences included artists like Lana Del Rey. Fierstein aimed to combine club music with traditional show tunes. This approach allowed the musical to capture the energy of Lola's world while maintaining theatrical depth.

The production history of Kinky Boots is marked by significant commercial and critical milestones. The original production premiered in Chicago in October 2012. It made its Broadway debut at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on April 4, 2013. Although it was initially considered an underdog compared to Matilda the Musical, it soon surpassed its rival in weekly box office gross. The Broadway run lasted six years, ending on April 7, 2019. The show also expanded internationally, making its West End debut in London in 2015.

Kinky Boots connects deeply to broader social and cultural themes. The characters of Charlie and Lola come from seemingly opposite worlds. However, they discover they share many commonalities. Both men struggle with the need to stand up to their fathers. The musical uses the specific setting of a shoe factory to discuss larger issues. It explores how niche markets can help businesses survive. Most importantly, it highlights the importance of accepting people for who they truly are.
