Rent is a celebrated rock musical that explores the lives of impoverished artists. The story takes place in the East Village of Manhattan's Alphabet City. These characters struggle to survive and create art while living under the shadow of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The musical uses loud, energetic rock music to connect with a modern audience. It is a story about finding meaning and community during difficult times.

The creation of the musical was a long process of revision and dedication. Composer Jonathan Larson spent years writing hundreds of songs to develop the show. To support himself while composing, he worked as a waiter at the Moondance Diner. He incorporated many personal details from his own life into the script. These included living conditions like a bathtub in a kitchen or a broken buzzer. The final version of the production eventually featured 42 distinct songs.

The musical's concept began in 1988 with playwright Billy Aronson. Aronson wanted to modernize the 1896 opera La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini. He envisioned replacing the splendor of the opera with the noise of New York. In 1989, Larson joined Aronson to collaborate on the project. They co-wrote songs such as "Santa Fe," "Rent," and "I Should Tell You." Larson eventually took the concept to develop it into his own rock opera. Under their agreement, Aronson received credit for the "original concept & additional lyrics" if the show reached Broadway.

Development of the show involved many different stages and workshop productions. A workshop reading at the New York Theatre Workshop in March 1993 revealed structural problems. The plot was overly complex and the length was cumbersome. Many songs from this early stage were later removed or rewritten. For example, "Right Brain" became the song "One Song Glory." Other songs like "Real Estate" and "Open Road" were also cut from the final version. These changes helped refine the story into its final, successful form.

The history of Rent is marked by a sudden and emotional beginning. The musical had its official off-Broadway premiere on January 26, 1996. However, Jonathan Larson died from an undiagnosed aortic dissection the night before. This medical event occurred on January 25, 1996. Because of his death, the first preview became a sing-through in his memory. The show's popularity led it to move to the Nederlander Theatre on Broadway on April 29, 1996. It ran there for 12 years and grossed more than $280 million.

The characters in Rent have direct parallels to the characters in Puccini's opera. For instance, the poet Rodolfo is reimagined as the songwriter Roger Davis. The seamstress Mimì becomes Mimi Márquez, an erotic dancer living with HIV. The painter Marcello is transformed into Mark Cohen, a Jewish-American filmmaker. Even the melodies show these connections through direct musical references. The song "Light My Candle" draws from "Che gelida manina," and "Take Me or Leave Me" parallels "Quando me'n vo'."

Many elements of the musical are rooted in real-world locations and social issues. The setting for the "La Vie Bohème" numbers is based on the actual Life Café restaurant. The riot depicted in the first act was inspired by the 1988 East Village riot. Additionally, the song "Will I?" was inspired by Larson's time at a support group called Friends in Deed. This group helped people dealing with illness and grief. Larson even used the names of his friends who had died to honor them in the musical.

Rent connects classical opera traditions with modern social realities. By replacing tuberculosis with HIV/AIDS, Larson updated the stakes of the original story. The musical bridges the gap between 19th-century Paris and the 1990s New York City. It serves as a bridge between traditional musical theater and the MTV generation. This connection allowed the show to achieve massive success through national tours and foreign productions. In 2005, the story was even adapted into a motion picture.
