Jesus Christ Superstar is a sung-through rock opera. This means the entire story is told through music rather than spoken dialogue. The music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the lyrics were written by Tim Rice. The work is loosely based on the Gospel accounts of the Passion. However, it focuses heavily on the internal psychology of the characters. Much of the plot centers on Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve apostles. Judas is deeply dissatisfied with how Jesus manages his followers. He worries that the movement might trigger a harsh response from the Roman Empire.

The production uses a unique style that blends different time periods. The lyrics include contemporary slang and modern attitudes. The creators also included ironic allusions to modern life within the political events. This results in many intentional anachronisms, which are things that appear out of their proper time. For example, a historical setting might include modern speech or sensibilities. This approach helps the audience connect the ancient story to modern human experiences.

The story is divided into two distinct acts. In Act I, the tension builds between the apostles and the religious leaders. Judas expresses concern that Jesus's fame is becoming a threat to the Jewish people. He also argues that resources, like fine oil, should be used to help the poor instead of being spent on comforts. Meanwhile, the High Priest Caiaphas and the Pharisees decide that Jesus must be executed to protect the nation from Roman intervention. Act II follows the final days of Jesus. It covers the Last Supper, the betrayal by Judas, and the eventual trial and crucifixion. The music tracks the emotional shifts from the doubt in the Garden of Gethsemane to the chaos of the trial.

The history of the show began not on a stage, but on a record. The composers initially could not find backing for a full theatrical production. Instead, they released the score as a 1970 concept album. A concept album is a musical recording where the songs tell a unified story. The album was an immediate success. This popularity led to the show's Broadway debut in 1971. The original production opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre on October 12, 1971. It was directed by Tom O'Horgan and featured Jeff Fenholt as Jesus.

Success for the musical was measured in both longevity and money. In London, the show ran for eight years from 1972 to 1980. During this time, it held the record for the longest-running West End musical until 1989, when it was overtaken by the musical Cats. By 1980, the musical had grossed a massive amount of money worldwide. However, the early years were marked by legal battles. Producer Robert Stigwood had to fight "outright pirates" who staged unauthorized productions. These unsanctioned shows appeared in many cities, including Los Angeles, Boston, and San Francisco. MCA Records investigated 21 unauthorized productions in the United States to protect the rights of the owners.

The musical requires a wide range of vocal skill from its performers. The role of Jesus is written for a baritenor. This is a voice type that combines the qualities of a baritone and a tenor. The singer must be able to reach notes from A2 to A4, including falsetto up to G5. Judas is a tenor, singing from B2 to B4. Other roles require different depths, such as Caiaphas, who is a bass-baritone. These specific vocal ranges allow the music to express the intense emotions of the characters.

Jesus Christ Superstar connects religious history with the medium of rock music. It explores how political pressure and personal doubt can shape historical events. By focusing on the perspective of Judas, the show asks questions about leadership and responsibility. It turns a well-known religious narrative into a psychological study. The combination of rock music and ancient themes created a new way for musical theater to tell stories. This helped define the genre of the rock opera for future generations.
