Andrew Lloyd Webber, Baron Lloyd-Webber, is a highly influential English composer and impresario. An impresario is a person who organizes and manages large-scale theatrical productions. He is best known for his work in musical theatre, a genre where songs and dialogue combine to tell a story. Many of his musical works have achieved massive commercial success. Some of his productions have run for over a decade in London's West End and on Broadway in New York. In 2001, The New York Times described him as the most commercially successful composer in history.

The creation of a musical involves complex layers of artistic collaboration. A composer like Lloyd Webber writes the melodies and the musical score. Often, they partner with a lyricist to write the words that the characters sing. In his early career, Lloyd Webber worked extensively with lyricist Tim Rice. They collaborated on several projects, including the biblical musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. This show used a technique called pastiche, which means it imitated various musical styles. The score included elements of Elvis-style rock'n'roll, Calypso, and country music. Later, Lloyd Webber moved toward a through-composed style. This means the music is continuous and closely resembles the structure of an opera.

Lloyd Webber's career is defined by several distinct musical stages and types of work. He has composed 21 musicals, a song cycle, and a Latin Requiem Mass. His early work, such as The Likes of Us, followed the style of 1940s and 1950s Broadway musicals. This style often featured a traditional overture, which is a medley of tunes from the show. His later works became more complex and operatic. He also composed film scores and instrumental pieces, such as the Variations for his brother Julian. Some of his songs, like "Memory" from Cats, became famous even outside of the original theatre productions.

His musical journey began with a deep immersion in a highly musical household. He was born in 1948 to William Lloyd Webber, a composer and organist, and Jean Hermione Johnstone, a violinist and pianist. His brother, Julian Lloyd Webber, became a world-renowned solo cellist. Andrew began playing the piano and violin at age three. He started composing his own music by age six and wrote a suite of six pieces by age nine. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where he later received an honorary doctorate. He also attended Westminster School as a Queen's Scholar from 1960 to 1965.

Lloyd Webber's professional success is reflected in extraordinary numbers and prestigious honors. His musical Cats ran in London for 21 years, completing 8,949 performances. His musical Jesus Christ Superstar grossed more than $80 million worldwide by 1980. He has earned seven Tony Awards and seven Laurence Olivier Awards. He also holds an Academy Award, an Emmy, and a Grammy. In 2018, he became only the thirteenth person to win these four major awards. These achievements highlight his massive impact on global entertainment.

Several notable examples of his work demonstrate his versatility as an artist. Evita, a musical based on the life of Eva Perón, was released first as a concept album. This album featured the hit single "Don't Cry for Me Argentina." Another major example is The Phantom of the Opera, which broke the Broadway running record previously held by Cats. His ability to work with different texts is also evident. For Cats, he used the poetry of T. S. Eliot. For his musical Jeeves, he worked with writer Alan Ayckbourn.
