The music was made by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Tim Rice wrote the lyrics, or the words to the songs.

The story is loosely based on old accounts of Jesus. It looks at the feelings of the characters. Much of the plot focuses on Judas. He is one of the twelve apostles. Judas worries that the followers of Jesus are getting out of control. He fears the Roman Empire might punish them.

At first, the creators made a concept album. This is a record that tells a story. The album was a big hit in 1970. This success led to a stage show on Broadway in 1971.
