The show tells a story about young artists. They live in the East Village of New York City. These artists struggle to make a life. They also face the serious illness known as HIV/AIDS. The musical was inspired by a very old opera called La Bohème. That opera was also about poor artists in Paris.

Jonathan Larson wrote the music and the words. He spent years working on the show. He even worked as a waiter to pay his bills. Larson died the night before the show first opened. Because of this, the first performance was a tribute to him.

Rent became a huge success. It won big awards like the Tony Award for Best Musical. It played on Broadway for twelve years. The show made over $280 million. Many people love the songs in the show. Some songs were inspired by real support groups. These groups helped people facing illness and grief.
