Larson grew up in New York. As a young boy, he played the trumpet and the tuba. He also took piano lessons and sang in a choir. Later, he went to college to study acting. He eventually chose to focus on writing music instead.

Larson is most famous for two big shows. One is called Rent. It tells stories about young people in New York City. Another is called Tick, Tick... Boom!. This show was based on his own life. Rent was a huge success on Broadway. It even won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Sadly, Larson died in 1996. He died just one day before the first preview of Rent. He died from an aortic dissection, which is a serious heart issue. His work lives on today. His family started grants to help new artists. These grants give money to writers to help them make their own art. Many of his songs are kept in the Library of Congress.
