The show uses modern words and slang in its lyrics. It also uses modern ideas to show political events from long ago. This creates a mix of old and new styles on stage. In the first act, Judas worries about the Roman Empire. He also thinks the money spent on oil should help the poor. Meanwhile, the High Priest Caiaphas and the Pharisees also see Jesus as a threat. They decide that Jesus must be executed for the good of the people. In the second act, Jesus predicts that Peter will deny him three times. Judas also decides to help arrest Jesus. He accepts thirty pieces of silver to help the cause.

The creators did not start with a stage show. First, they released a concept album in 1970. A concept album is a record that tells a complete story. This album was an immediate success. Because of this success, the show moved to Broadway in 1971. It opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre on October 12, 1971. The show was directed by Tom O'Horgan. It featured stars like Jeff Fenholt and Ben Vereen. The original Broadway production lasted for 711 performances until June 1973.

This musical has a very long history of success. In London, the show ran for eight years between 1972 and 1980. It held the record for the longest-running West End musical until 1989. That record was later taken by the musical Cats. By the year 1980, the musical had earned a huge amount of money worldwide. Before the Broadway show, many unauthorized versions popped up in the United States. A producer named Robert Stigwood had to fight to protect the rights to the show. He even had to stop shows in cities like Los Angeles and New York.

You can hear many different types of voices in this rock opera. The role of Jesus is written for a baritenor. This means the singer uses both baritone and tenor notes. Judas is also a tenor. Other characters like Caiaphas are bass-baritones. This means they have very deep voices. The music helps us understand the different people in the story. We hear the fear of Judas and the doubts of Jesus. We also hear the anger of King Herod and the crowd. The songs turn a historical story into a powerful musical experience.
