*Hello, Dolly!* is a celebrated musical theater production that explores themes of romance, reinvention, and joy.

The musical features music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and a book by Michael Stewart. It tells the story of Dolly Gallagher Levi, a strong-willed widow and matchmaker. Dolly uses her skills in "meddling" to help others find love. She also offers services like dance instruction and mandolin lessons. Through her actions, the story shows how one person can bring excitement to a dull life. The musical is famous for its vibrant energy and memorable songs.

The plot follows a series of interconnected adventures between Yonkers and New York City. Dolly travels to Yonkers to find a wife for Horace Vandergelder. Horace is a wealthy, grumpy man who owns Vandergelder's Hay and Feed. While Dolly works on Horace's love life, she secretly hopes to marry him herself. Meanwhile, two clerks named Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker seek adventure in the city. They even use exploding tomato cans to create a bad smell to escape work. The characters eventually converge at the upscale Harmonia Gardens Restaurant for a chaotic and funny evening.

The story is structured around the characters' journeys toward new beginnings. In Act I, the setting moves from the quiet town of Yonkers to the bustling streets of New York. Characters participate in events like the Fourteenth Street Association Parade. They also enter a polka competition at the Harmonia Gardens. Act II focuses on the tension and comedy at the restaurant. The characters face various mishaps, including a confusion over wallets and a trip to night court. Ultimately, the characters find love, and Horace learns that life is better when shared with others.

The history of *Hello, Dolly!* traces back to much older theatrical works. It originated from an 1835 English play titled *A Day Well Spent* by John Oxenford. In 1842, Johann Nestroy adapted this into a farce called *Einen Jux will er sich machen*. The American writer Thornton Wilder later adapted Nestroy's work into his 1938 play, *The Merchant of Yonkers*. Because that play did not succeed, Wilder revised it in 1954. He retitled the play *The Matchmaker* and expanded the role of Dolly. This evolution provided the foundation for the modern musical.

The musical's production history is filled with significant milestones and records. It debuted at the Fisher Theater in Detroit on November 18, 1963. After moving to Broadway in 1964, it won 10 Tony Awards. This included the prestigious awards for Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical. This achievement set a record for most Tony wins that lasted for 37 years. The show was also a massive commercial success, running for 2,844 performances on Broadway.
