A curtain is a piece of cloth used to block light or air.

You might see them in a home to help you sleep. They also provide privacy by stopping people outside from seeing in. When curtains hang in a window, they are sometimes called draperies. If they hang over a doorway, they are called portières.

Curtains can also be found on a theater stage. These drapes help block light or soak up sound. They can also hide parts of the stage that are not being used. People can move them by hand, with cords, or even with a computer.

There are many ways to make these fabrics work. Sheer curtains are made of thin, see-through material like silk or lace. They let in most of the light while protecting you from the sun. Uncoated fabrics are more common and use a tight weave to block light. Some curtains have a special coating on the back. A liquid rubber is applied and then dried with a heated roller.

This makes "dim-out" fabrics that block 50 to 70 percent of light. If they are coated three times, they become "blackout" curtains. These can block 100 percent of the light from a source.

Curtains have been used for a very long time. In ancient times, people in places like Pompeii used portières to divide rooms. Mosaics from the 2nd to 6th century show curtains hanging from rods. In England, curtains began to replace wooden shutters in the late 1500s. Before that, people used leather panels on iron rods. Later, they used woven wool. During the time of Elizabeth I, people imported fancy fabrics like velvet and damask. Some even used fabrics with jeweled embroidery.

Different cultures used curtains in special ways too. In the Fatimid Caliphate, a curtain called a stir was used. This was a veil used to hide a caliph during an audience. A servant called a ṣāḥib al-sitr would pull the veil back. This revealed the caliph sitting on his throne. This person also had many other important jobs. They might carry the caliph's sword or act as a master of ceremonies. This shows how curtains were more than just decoration.

There are at least twenty different styles of curtains today. You might see grommet curtains with metal rings for a pole. Others use a rod pocket or narrow straps called tab tops. Some curtains, like pencil pleat styles, use special tape to make folds. This tape was actually developed from tape used for machine gun bullets. You can also use tie-backs to hold curtains to the side. This helps decorate a room and makes it feel cozy. Curtains help control the light and the mood of any space.
