People hang them in windows or doors. They can block light or stop air drafts. In a home, they help you sleep by blocking light. They also give you privacy so people cannot see inside. Some curtains are called draperies when they hang in windows. Curtains over a doorway are called portières.

There are many ways to make curtains. Some are sheer. This means the fabric is thin and see-through. Sheer curtains let in a lot of light. Other curtains are coated. A special layer is put on the back. This can block almost all light. These are often called blackout curtains.

Curtains are used on stages too. Stage curtains can block light or soak up sound. They can hide the parts of the stage that are not being used. You can move curtains by hand. You can also use cords or even a computer. Some people use tie-backs to hold them open. This makes a room look pretty and cozy.
