They help people control how much light enters a room. Blinds can also help manage the temperature inside a building. In the summer, they can reduce solar gain, which is heat from the sun. In the winter, they can help stop heat loss. According to the Department of Energy in the United Kingdom, windows and doors make up about one-third of a home's total thermal loss.

When air inside a room touches a window, it can become warmer or cooler. This air then moves around the room through a process called convection.

There are many different ways these window coverings work.

Many blinds use slats, which are long, thin strips of hard material. These slats can be made of wood, plastic, or metal. In Venetian blinds, the horizontal slats are held together by cords. When you pull the cords, the slats move together to block light. Vertical blinds use long strips called vanes that hang from a track. These vanes can rotate to change the light or slide to one side.

Other types use soft fabric instead of hard slats. Roller blinds use fabric wrapped around a tube. You pull a chain to roll the fabric up or down.

People have been improving blind designs for a long time.

A design for blinds that could be held at angles was shown in 1841. Later, in 1948, the Flexible Blind Company introduced vertical blinds. These became a popular choice because they look streamlined and are easy to clean. Cellular shades, which are also called honeycomb shades, were introduced in 1985.

These shades have a special structure that traps air. This creates a barrier between the window and the room to help with heat. Some modern blinds even use motors so they can be controlled by a computer.

There are many specific names and facts about different styles.

Panel blinds are sometimes called Japanese blinds because they are based on Japanese shōji. Most of these use white polyester to look like traditional Japanese paper. Roman shades are often called shades instead of blinds in the industry. They stack up neatly when they are opened.

Venetian blinds were very common in office buildings during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One famous place that used them was the RCA Building in New York City. The Burlington Venetian Blind Co. in Vermont even supplied blinds for the Empire State Building.

Choosing the right blind depends on what a person needs for their window.

Some blinds are ready-made to fit standard window sizes. These are often cheaper and easy to find. Other blinds are made to measure, which means they are cut to fit a specific window exactly. These fit better but cost more money.

People also choose blinds based on safety. Cordless blinds are helpful because they reduce the risk of strangulation for small children. Whether they are made of cheap polyester or expensive wood, blinds help make our living spaces more comfortable.
