A culture war is a type of conflict between different social groups. It is not a war with soldiers and weapons. Instead, it is a struggle over ideas and values. Different groups try to make their own way of thinking the main rule for everyone. These fights often happen over "hot-button" topics. These are subjects that make people feel very strong emotions. They can involve how people live, what they believe, or how they spend money.

These conflicts work by splitting society into different sides. This is often called political polarization. People use strong stories to show why their side is right. This can make people feel like they belong to one group and are against another. Some experts say these fights are caused by real differences in how people live. Other researchers believe these fights are created on purpose. They say political groups use these issues to gain power. They might use a "wedge issue" to split voters apart.

The term comes from a German word, "Kulturkampf." This means "culture struggle." It refers to a historical event in Germany. The English term is a direct translation of that German idea. In the United States, these tensions appeared in the 1920s. During that time, people in cities and people in the country had different values. This happened as many new immigrants arrived in the States. Later, a sociologist named James Davison Hunter used the idea again in 1991. He wrote a book called "Culture Wars: The Struggle to Define America."

Many specific issues can start a culture war. James Davison Hunter listed things like religion and privacy. Other leaders have named different topics. For example, Pat Buchanan spoke about a cultural war in 1992. He mentioned things like the environment and feminism. He also talked about religious schools and the rights of women. In the early 2000s, a group called neoconservatives saw changes in the family as a spiritual crisis. This era also saw voting patterns change. People began to vote based on their religious or scientific beliefs.

Culture wars are linked to how we see our own communities. They show how deeply people care about their traditions and their future. These debates can change how schools teach history to children. They can even lead to people removing statues from public places. This shows how much these ideas affect the world around us. Even when people disagree, these fights show that society is constantly changing. They help us understand why people choose to vote or act in certain ways.
