A culture war is a metaphorical conflict between different social groups. These groups struggle to impose their specific ideologies on mainstream society. This process often involves "hot-button" politics regarding values and lifestyles. Such conflicts use adversarial social narratives to create political polarization. Polarization is when a society splits into two opposing sides. These struggles can focus on economic matters or public policy. They often center on abstract arguments about morality and social values.

The mechanism of a culture war involves the use of "wedge issues." These are specific social policy topics used to create political cleavage. In a multicultural society, these issues divide people into distinct camps. Some scholars argue these conflicts are artificial or asymmetric. They suggest political special interest groups or party dynamics create these fights. Instead of being natural, they may be techniques to build "in-groups" and "out-groups." This helps certain political actors gain power by exploiting social grievances.

There are different ways to view the causes of these wars. Some researchers believe they result from authentic cultural differences. Others, like sociologist Scott Melzer, suggest they are created by reactive organizations. For example, Melzer notes that the National Rifle Association of America used culture wars to unite specific groups. Similarly, Susan B. Ridgely writes that Focus on the Family helped bifurcate media consumption. This organization promoted a specific "traditional family" archetype to conservative religious women. This created a sense that such traditions were under liberal attack.

The term "culture war" is a calque of the German word "Kulturkampf." This translates to "culture struggle" and refers to a historical event in Germany. The concept has deep roots in American history as well. In the 1920s, urban and rural values in the United States came into conflict. This followed decades of immigration from Europe. Later, in 1991, sociologist James Davison Hunter applied the concept to modern American life. He published "Culture Wars: The Struggle to Define America" to describe a massive political realignment.

James Davison Hunter identified two main ideological polarities in his research. He called these opposing impulses "Progressivism" and "Orthodoxy." He noted that many "hot-button" issues defined these groups. These issues included abortion, gun politics, and the separation of church and state. Other topics included privacy, drug use, and homosexuality. Hunter argued that society had divided into two warring groups based on these world-views. These groups were defined more by ideology than by social class or ethnicity.

Political figures have used culture war rhetoric to influence elections. In 1992, Pat Buchanan gave a famous speech at the Republican National Convention. He claimed a religious war was happening for the "soul of America." Buchanan listed many fronts, such as environmentalism, feminism, and popular culture. He also mentioned clashes over the Confederate flag and taxpayer-funded art. These rhetorical battles had significant impacts on national politics. They influenced whether certain candidates won or lost major elections in the 1990s.

In the early 2000s, the rise of neoconservatism shifted the debate again. Neoconservatives viewed national problems as moral or spiritual crises. They saw the decline of religion and traditional family structures as major issues. This era saw a strong correlation between religious belief and voting patterns. For example, voting for Republicans became closely linked to orthodox religious beliefs. Conversely, voting for Democrats became linked to modernist religious beliefs or being nonreligious. These shifts show how deeply culture wars connect to the fundamental structures of society.
