Military history is the study of armed conflict throughout human history. It examines how wars impact societies, cultures, and economies. Researchers also look at how conflict changes local and international relationships. This field covers many specific subjects. These include the causes of war and its social foundations. Historians study military doctrine, which is the set of rules for fighting. They also examine logistics, leadership, technology, strategy, and tactics.

Many military academies use history as an applied field. Commanders study the past to avoid repeating old mistakes. They aim to improve current performance by finding historical parallels. This helps leaders capitalize on lessons learned from previous battles. The Combat Studies Institute focuses on themes and context. They use the motto "Past is Prologue" to guide instructors. This approach emphasizes understanding the bigger picture rather than just memorizing dates.

The discipline is dynamic because military forces change rapidly. Technological developments have shaped this field significantly. The Industrial Revolution brought a period of frenetic technological change. Later, the nuclear and information ages introduced new complexities. Some experts use the term Revolution in Military Affairs, or RMA. This concept explains how emerging technologies, like gunpowder, shape warfare. It suggests that rapid change occurs in short bursts followed by stability.

There is a difference between popular and academic military history. Military history is often called an "orphan" in the history profession. It is very popular with the general public. However, it is often marginalized in university history departments. Much popular work is written by journalists or people outside academia. Professional work is often produced within the military establishment. The Society for Military History represents academic scholars. It has 2,300 members and publishes The Journal of Military History.

Historians use historiographical analysis to ensure accuracy. Historiography is the study of how history is written. This method helps create an unbiased view of the past. It is necessary because leaders may exaggerate successes or hide failures. Historians must also deal with missing or secret records. For example, the nature of Greek fire remains unknown. Researching modern conflicts like Operation Iraqi Freedom presents unique challenges. This is because many records are classified to protect secrets.

Historians also face challenges like Eurocentricity and technological bias. These are tendencies to focus too much on Europe or new tools. Some researchers focus too much on dominant military powers. Others might separate land, sea, and air conflicts too strictly. Even the political views of historians can affect their work. A study by Jeffrey Kimball looked at this issue. He surveyed 109 diplomatic historians and 54 military historians. He found that political views can correlate with how people interpret war.

In Kimball's study, military historians showed different political patterns. 0% were identified as Socialists. 40% were identified as Conservative. 35% were identified as Liberal. 18% were identified as having no specific preference. 8% were identified as "Other." This shows how different perspectives can shape historical interpretation. Despite these complexities, wars remain some of the most studied periods.

Military museums provide a way for the public to see history. These museums often organize displays from a national perspective. They show how warfare played a role in a country's history. Exhibits include weapons, uniforms, and wartime propaganda. Some museums are specialized. The Deutsches Panzermuseum focuses on tanks. The International Spy Museum focuses on espionage. The Canadian War Museum offers a more general view.

Curators often debate how to represent war in museums. They must decide how to show both positive and negative aspects. While soldiers are often praised, war itself is rarely called "good." Some argue that museums present a sanitized version of conflict. A controversy occurred in 1995 regarding an atomic bomb bomber. The Smithsonian Institution planned to display the aircraft's fuselage. This led to an uproar from veterans and caused the exhibit's cancellation.

Documentation of military history is very old. It began with conflicts in Egypt and Sumer around 3150 BC. The Egyptian scribe Tjaneni recorded the Battle of Megiddo. This is considered the first battle recorded in reliable detail.

Ancient epics like the Iliad also contain military details. Greek historians like Herodotus and Thucydides provided early written accounts. Thucydides was known for his impartiality. He interviewed eyewitnesses and examined many documents. Roman historians also recorded the rise of Rome. Julius Caesar even wrote memoirs about his own military campaigns.
