A pandemic is a very large outbreak of sickness. It happens when a disease spreads over a wide area and crosses borders between countries. The COVID-19 pandemic was caused by a virus named SARS-CoV-2.

This virus is closely related to viruses found in bats and pangolins. Most people who catch it feel symptoms like fever, a sore throat, or a cough. Some people might feel very sick, while others have no symptoms at all. The virus often spreads through tiny particles in the air.

To stop the virus, many countries used special rules. These rules are called mitigation measures.

Some places used lockdowns to keep people at home. Others required people to wear masks or use social distancing. Governments also used testing and contact tracing to find the virus. Travel was often restricted to stop the sickness from moving to new lands. Many schools and businesses closed for a long time. These steps were meant to slow the spread and protect everyone.

The pandemic began with an outbreak in Wuhan, China. This happened in December 2019.

The World Health Organization (WHO) watched the situation closely. They declared a public health emergency in January 2020. By March 11, 2020, the WHO called it a pandemic. Scientists worked hard to name the virus correctly. They chose the name COVID-19 in February 2020. This name helps people understand what the disease is.

There were also shortages of food and other goods. Many people died from the sickness. Experts estimate that between 18.2 and 33.5 million people died. This made it the fifth-deadliest pandemic in history. Even though it was difficult, doctors and scientists found ways to help. They created vaccines that began to reach people in December 2020.

Because there were fewer cars on the road, pollution went down for a while. The pandemic also brought up important questions about fairness. People talked about how to make sure everyone gets healthcare. By 2025, many experts believed the pandemic had moved into a new phase. It is now considered endemic in many places. This means the virus is still around, but it is not a global emergency anymore.
