The 1918–1920 influenza pandemic was a very serious global event.

It was caused by a specific virus known as H1N1. This sickness spread across the entire world in a short time. Some experts believe nearly 500 million people were infected by it. This number is about one third of all people then. The number of deaths was also very high. Estimates say between 17 million and 100 million people died.

This makes it one of the deadliest events in history.

Many things helped the virus spread so quickly. The pandemic happened near the end of World War I. Large groups of people were living in crowded places. Soldiers lived in close quarters in medical camps and hospitals. Poor hygiene and lack of food also made things harder. These conditions helped bacteria cause even more sickness in victims.

The virus was very effective at moving from person to person. It even caused a strange blue-violet color in some patients' faces. This specific look led some people to call it the "purple death."

People have many different names for this flu.

Many people call it the "Spanish flu." However, the disease did not actually start in Spain. During the war, many countries hid bad news to keep spirits high. Spain was a neutral country and did not hide news. Spanish newspapers reported the sickness very openly to their readers. This created a false idea that the disease began there.

Other places had different names too. In Japan, some called it the "sumo flu." In Senegal, it was called the "Brazilian flu."

Scientists still study where the virus first appeared.

It is hard to know the exact geographic origin. Some historians believe it began in Haskell County, Kansas. Other studies look at large army camps in Étaples, France. These camps were very crowded and had many animals nearby. Some researchers think the virus might have moved from birds to pigs. Others suggest the virus was circulating in Europe for years.

Most flu outbreaks mostly hurt very young or very old people. This pandemic was different because many young adults got very sick. This was a very surprising and hard thing for the world. Today, health groups try to avoid using names like "Spanish flu." They do this to prevent unfair labels on different countries.
