The Black Death was a massive plague pandemic that changed the world. It moved through Europe between the years 1346 and 1353. This event was one of the most fatal pandemics in human history. Scientists believe it killed as many as 50 million people. This was about half of the people living in Europe at that time.

The disease caused huge changes in how people lived and worked. It changed the economy and even how people thought about the world. It also marked the start of a second great plague pandemic.

A tiny bacterium called Yersinia pestis caused the sickness. This germ spread through fleas and through the air.

Fleas often lived on black rats that traveled on ships. Once the disease reached land, it could spread from person to person. This helped the sickness move very quickly into the inland areas. This way of spreading is called pneumonic plague. Because it moved so fast, it was harder for people to stop.

Researchers have worked hard to find where the plague began. They looked for "patient zero," or the very first victims. In 2022, scientists studied old graves near Lake Issyk-Kul in modern Kyrgyzstan. They found evidence of the Yersinia pestis germ in teeth from 1338 to 1339.

This area was part of the Chagatai Khanate. This discovery shows the plague started in Central Asia. From there, it traveled along the famous Silk Road trade routes. The Mongol Empire's fast postal stations helped the disease spread across continents.

The plague caused many strong lands to fall apart. The Mongol Empire was already split into four parts when the sickness arrived. The plague killed many merchants and officials who ran the trade networks. In the Golden Horde, the disease hit cities like Sarai along the Volga River.

During a siege at the port of Kaffa in 1347, the disease spread from the Mongol army to Genoese ships. These ships carried the sickness to Sicily and the rest of Europe. In China, the Yuan Dynasty fell because of the plague and famine.

This led to the start of the Ming Dynasty.

People did not actually call the sickness the "Black Death" in the 1300s. Most writers at the time used names like "the Great Death" or "pestilence." The name "Black Death" did not become common until much later. It first appeared in English in the year 1755.

Before that, the name was used by writers in other languages. The term likely comes from describing death as something dark or fatal. Even though the name is famous today, it is a newer way to describe this old event.
