The Black Death was a very big sickness. It spread through Europe from 1346 to 1353.

A tiny germ caused the disease. We call this germ Yersinia pestis. Fleas helped spread the germ. These fleas lived on black rats. The rats traveled on ships. This helped the sickness move fast.

Scientists found old graves in Kyrgyzstan. These graves show the germ was there in 1338. This area was part of the Chagatai Khanate. This was a land ruled by the Mongols. The sickness spread along trade routes. It traveled on the Silk Road.

The sickness changed the world. Many people died in Europe and the Middle East. It also hit the Mongol Empire. The empire fell apart because of the plague. In China, the Yuan Dynasty fell too. This happened because of the sickness and hunger.

People did not call it the "Black Death" back then. They called it the "Great Death." The name "Black Death" became common much later.
