The Plague of Justinian was a huge sickness that spread long ago. It happened between the years 541 and 549. This epidemic hit the Mediterranean Basin, Europe, and the Near East. It especially affected the Byzantine Empire and the Sasanian Empire. This event was the first part of a very long plague pandemic. This pandemic lasted for about two hundred years. It changed how people lived, worked, and prayed in many lands.

The sickness spread in a specific way through trade. It likely arrived in Roman Egypt in the year 541. People think infected rats on grain ships carried it to cities. These ships moved food across the Mediterranean Sea. Fleas on the rats may have spread the germ to people. By the year 543, the plague reached every part of the empire. It stayed in Northern Europe and the Arabian Peninsula until 549.

Many people wrote about this time in history. A man named Procopius was a historian for the Byzantine court. He said the plague killed many people in the capital, Constantinople. He even said the leader, Emperor Justinian I, got sick and recovered. Another historian named John of Ephesus also wrote about the sickness. A man named Evagrius Scholasticus survived the disease as a child. He lost many family members to the many waves of sickness.

Scientists now know the cause of this plague. It was a tiny germ called Yersinia pestis. This is the same germ that caused the Black Death much later. Researchers found traces of this germ in old bones. They think the plague might have started near the Tian Shan mountains. This area is near the borders of China and Kazakhstan. Some experts think it might have come from Africa instead. The exact number of people who died is still a big debate.

The plague changed the whole world in many ways. It made it hard for farmers to grow crops. Because of this, the price of grain went up in cities. The empire also lost money because people could not pay taxes. This happened while Justinian was spending money on wars and big churches. The sickness even changed how different groups of people fought for land. It was a very difficult time for everyone living through it.
