People catch this virus in a few different ways. One way is through respiratory droplets. These are tiny drops made when people breathe, talk, or even sing. You can also catch it by touching things called fomites. These are objects that have the virus on them. Some people also spread it through the fecal-oral route. This happens when the virus moves from waste to the mouth.

Scientists worked hard to find where the virus started. They traced it back to cave-dwelling horseshoe bats. These bats live in Xiyang Yi Ethnic Township in Yunnan, China. The virus moved from the bats to Asian palm civets. Then, it moved from the civets to humans. The first cases were reported in Foshan, China, in November 2002.

Doctors used many tools to stop the spread. They used personal protective equipment like masks and gloves. N-95 masks helped medical workers stay safe. They also used isolation to keep sick people away. This means putting them in special rooms. They even used quarantine to watch people who were near sick people. These smart steps helped end the outbreak in 2004.
