Avian influenza

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Avian influenza is a disease caused by the influenza A virus. This tiny virus mostly affects birds, but it can sometimes infect mammals like humans. Wild waterbirds, such as ducks and geese, are the main hosts for this virus. These birds often carry the virus without getting very sick themselves. This helps the virus travel long distances as birds migrate across the world.

Because it moves so easily, it can spread quickly through flocks of poultry.

Scientists group these viruses into two main types based on how they affect chickens. The first type is called low pathogenic avian influenza, or LPAI. This type usually causes only mild symptoms in domestic chickens. The second type is highly pathogenic avian influenza, or HPAI. This version is much more serious and can cause sudden death in poultry. It also causes a large drop in how many eggs chickens produce.

Scientists use a specific test to see if a virus is HPAI.

Researchers have been studying these viruses for a long time. A scientist named Edoardo Perroncito first identified the disease in 1878. He was able to tell it apart from other bird diseases. Later, in 1955, experts found that this bird plague was related to human influenza. By 1972, people realized many types of the virus lived in wild birds. Since 2006, the World Organization for Animal Health has required reports on certain strains. This helps experts watch for viruses that might change into more dangerous types.

The virus has a very specific structure that scientists study. It is a tiny particle called a virion that is 80 to 120 nanometers wide. The virus has two main proteins on its surface called hemagglutinin and neuraminidase. The hemagglutinin, or H, helps the virus enter a host cell. The neuraminidase, or N, helps new viruses leave the cell to find others.

Scientists name these strains using both letters, like H5N1. This name tells us which specific proteins the virus uses.

Understanding how the virus moves is a big job for scientists. Humans usually get sick after being very close to infected birds or mammals. People can also get sick from touching contaminated surfaces or eating improperly prepared animal products. The virus can live for a long time in fresh water or even in freezing temperatures. This is why it is important to be careful around wild birds.
