A recession is a time when the economy struggles. The COVID-19 recession was a huge global event. It was caused by lockdowns to stop a new germ. This germ is called SARS-CoV-2.

Most countries began to see this recession in February 2020. The lockdowns meant people could not go to work or shops. This caused many businesses to close very quickly. This sudden stop drove the whole world economy into a crisis.

When the economy slows down, many people lose their jobs. This happened very fast in 2020. In the United States, over 10 million people asked for unemployment help. This was so many people that computer systems could not keep up.

The United Nations said the loss of work was huge. They predicted a loss of 195 million full-time workers' hours. In some places, unemployment reached 10% or even higher. This made life very hard for many families around the world.

Money markets also faced a very scary time. In late February and March 2020, the stock market crashed. This means the value of companies dropped by 20 to 30%.

However, things began to change in early April 2020. By April 2022, most big economies were doing better. Many markets even set new records by the end of 2020. Recovery is happening, but some places may wait until 2025.

Other big events made the world economy weak before the germ arrived. In 2019, there was a trade war between the U.S. and China. President Donald Trump set tariffs to change trade practices. This caused trouble for farmers and makers in the U.S. In Europe, the UK was planning to leave the EU. This event is called Brexit. These things made the global economy slow down in 2019.

New problems appeared as the world tried to get back to normal. As people left lockdowns, they wanted more energy. This caused a global energy crisis between 2021 and 2023. The war in Ukraine made this even harder. Russia invaded Ukraine, which changed how energy was sold. This caused oil prices to change a lot. Some countries had to find new ways to get fuel. These events show how connected the whole world is today.
