To stop the germ, many countries used lockdowns. This means people stayed home to stay safe. Because of this, many businesses had to close. This caused a global recession. A recession is a time when the economy struggles.

Many people lost their jobs very quickly. In the United States, over 10 million people filed for unemployment help. The stock market also crashed in early 2020.

This means the value of many companies dropped fast.

Other things made the situation harder. In 2019, there were trade wars between the U.S. and China. In Europe, the UK left the EU. This was called Brexit. These events made the economy weak even before the germ arrived. Later, a war in Ukraine caused energy prices to rise. This led to a global energy crisis. Some areas may not fully recover until 2025.
