The COVID-19 pandemic was a global health crisis caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

In epidemiology, a pandemic is an epidemic that spreads over a very wide area. It crosses international boundaries and affects many people. This specific outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. Scientists believe the virus has a zoonotic origin. This means it likely jumped from animals, such as bats or other mammals, to humans.

The virus is closely related to coronaviruses found in pangolins and bats.

Transmission of the virus often occurs through airborne particles. Most people experience symptoms like fever, fatigue, a sore throat, or a nocturnal cough.

However, symptoms can range from being asymptomatic to being deadly. Some people show no signs of illness at all. Mutations in the virus have created many different strains, also called variants. These variants have different levels of infectivity and virulence. Infectivity refers to how easily the virus spreads. Virulence refers to how severe the disease is.

To manage the spread, governments used various mitigation measures.

These included travel restrictions, lockdowns, and business closures. Many jurisdictions also implemented mask mandates and quarantines. Public health officials used testing systems and contact tracing to track the infected. Some people used telework, which is working from home, to avoid contact. These measures were meant to slow the virus and protect healthcare systems.

During 2020 and 2021, many schools and public areas also closed.

The timeline of the pandemic was marked by major declarations. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency on January 30, 2020. On March 11, 2020, the WHO assessed it as a pandemic. In February 2020, the WHO finalized the official names. They chose COVID-19 for the disease and SARS-CoV-2 for the virus. The name COVID-19 stands for Corona Virus Disease 2019. The WHO also used Greek letters to name variants of concern. This helped avoid using geographic locations, which can cause social stigma.

The pandemic had a massive impact on the global economy. It caused the largest global recession since the Great Depression. Supply chain disruptions led to widespread shortages of goods and food.

Panic buying also contributed to these shortages. On the other hand, reduced human activity led to a temporary decrease in pollution. The pandemic also caused social issues. It intensified political tensions and spread misinformation through social media. It raised serious questions about health equity and racial discrimination.

The human cost of the pandemic was extremely high. It is considered the fifth-deadliest pandemic or epidemic in history. Official counts vary based on testing and reporting methods. Estimates of true deaths range from 18.2 to 33.5 million people.

Mortality rates increase significantly with age. For example, the infection fatality ratio is much higher for the elderly. The risk is greatest for those with underlying conditions like diabetes or obesity.

Science provided tools to fight the virus. Vaccines were developed rapidly and deployed starting in December 2020. Programs like COVAX aimed to provide vaccine equity to all nations.

Doctors also used antiviral drugs and symptom control for treatments. By May 2023, the WHO declared the public health emergency had ended. Experts believe the virus has transitioned into an endemic phase. This means the disease continues to circulate but is no longer a global emergency.
