Inside these bolls, soft fibers are stuck to seeds. To use the cotton, people must separate the seeds. This used to be done by hand. It took many hours of hard work.

People have used machines to clean cotton for a long time. In India, people used a roller gin by the fifth century. Some used a worm gear, which is a part that helps wheels turn.

In 1793, Eli Whitney made a new machine. It used wire hooks to pull cotton through a screen. The seeds were too big for the small holes. So, the seeds stayed behind. Brushes then wiped the clean cotton away.

Whitney's machine made cotton farming grow very fast. This led to more people being held as slaves to pick the cotton. The machine helped clean the cotton, but it did not pick it. People still had to pick the cotton by hand. Machines for picking did not arrive until the 1930s.
