People used to clean it by hand. This took a long time. A machine called a cotton gin helps. It pulls the seeds out fast.

An inventor named Eli Whitney made a new machine. It used wires to pull the cotton through. Small holes let the cotton through.

The seeds are too big for the holes. So the seeds stay behind. Brushes then wipe the clean cotton away. This stops the machine from getting stuck.

This machine made work much faster. It helped make a lot more cotton. Now, big machines do this work.
