It used two rotating cylinders to do the job. The first cylinder had rows of thin wire teeth. These teeth gripped the cotton fibers and pulled them through a metal plate. This plate had small holes called ginning ribs. The cotton could fit through the holes, but the seeds were too big. After that, a second cylinder with brushes wiped the clean lint away. This kept the machine from getting jammed.

In India, a single-roller gin was used as early as the fifth century. By the 16th century, a worm-gear roller gin was common in the Mughal Empire. This machine used a crank handle to help it turn. These early machines helped India produce much more cotton textile. Some versions were even powered by water. These designs stayed almost the same for hundreds of years.

In the United States, Eli Whitney invented his modern gin in 1793.

To make the lint usable for making cloth, the seeds must be removed. Before the invention of the gin, this task was performed manually. It was a slow process that required many hours of labor for even small amounts of cotton. The invention of the gin changed this by allowing much greater productivity.

The mechanism of Eli Whitney’s 1793 gin relied on a clever combination of rotating parts. The machine used two main cylinders to perform the separation. The first cylinder featured rows of slender wire teeth around its circumference. These teeth gripped the cotton fibers as the cylinder rotated. The teeth pulled the fibers through a metal plate containing small holes known as ginning ribs. Because the seeds were too large to fit through these narrow gaps, they were left behind. The seeds fell into a collecting pot, while the fibers passed through. To prevent the machine from jamming, a second rotating cylinder with attached brushes wiped the cleaned lint from the first cylinder. This lint was then deposited into a collecting bucket.

Long before Whitney, various forms of cotton gins existed in the Indian subcontinent. The earliest evidence appears in the fifth century in Buddhist paintings at the Ajanta Caves. These early versions were simple, single-roller gins made of wood or iron. They functioned much like a mealing stone used to grind grain. By the 12th to 14th centuries, dual-roller gins began to appear in India and China. A significant innovation was the worm-gear roller gin, developed during the 13th to 14th centuries. This device used a worm gear and a crank handle to improve efficiency. This specific design was used throughout the Mughal Empire in the 16th century and remained virtually unchanged for centuries.

These early mechanical tools greatly expanded textile production. For example, a single Indian cotton gin allowed one man and one woman to clean 28 pounds of cotton per day. With a modified version, a man and a boy could produce 250 pounds daily. If oxen were used to power 16 of these machines, they could perform the work of 750 people. In the United States, the Indian roller gin was introduced in the mid-18th century. However, it was only suitable for long-staple cotton. It could not effectively process the short-staple cotton that grew commonly in states like Georgia.

Eli Whitney’s invention in 1793 specifically addressed the problem of short-staple cotton. He applied for a patent in 1793 and was granted it on March 14, 1794. While his gin made cotton farming much more profitable, it had complex social consequences. Whitney intended for the machine to reduce the amount of manual labor required. However, because the machine only cleaned the cotton and did not harvest it, the harvesting still had to be done by hand. Harvesting machines did not appear until the 1930s. As plantations expanded to meet the new profitability, the demand for manual labor led to an increase in the use of slaves.

Different types of gins were developed to handle various types of cotton. In 1840, Fones McCarthy patented the "Smooth Cylinder Cotton-gin." This was a roller gin that could process both short-staple and extra-long staple cotton. It used a reciprocating knife to detach the seed from the lint. Later, in the mid-20th century, rotating blades replaced these reciprocating blades. In 1879, Robert S. Munger invented the "system gin" in Texas. This system integrated many different machines into one continuous operation. It used air to move the cotton through the various stages of processing.

Modern automated cotton gins are much more powerful than their predecessors. They utilize multiple powered cleaning cylinders and saws to achieve high productivity. These machines can process up to 15 tonnes, or 33,000 pounds, of cotton every hour. After the initial cleaning, lint cleaners use saws and grid bars to remove any remaining immature seeds or foreign matter. Finally, a bale press compresses the clean cotton into bales for storage and shipping. Today, the seeds removed during this process are not wasted; they are used to grow more cotton or are sent to mills to produce cottonseed oil and meal.
