The common death adder is a special snake from Australia. It is one of the most venomous land snakes in its home. This snake is also found in Papua. It lives in many places like forests and grasslands. It can be found in Queensland and New South Wales. It also lives in South Australia. However, it is harder to find in Western Australia. It is no longer found in Victoria.

This snake has a very clever way of finding food. Most venomous snakes in Australia search for their meals. The death adder does not do that. It sits in one place and waits for a long time. It might wait for many days for a meal to pass by. The snake hides under leaves and debris on the ground. It uses its stripes to blend in with the earth. This is called camouflage.

To catch food, the snake uses a clever trick. It lies coiled in an ambush. It wiggles its tail near its head. The tail looks like a small grub. This movement attracts birds, lizards, or small mammals. When an animal comes to look at the tail, the snake strikes. It uses venom to catch the prey. Then it waits for the animal to die before it eats.

People first described this snake in the year 1802. It belongs to a snake family called Elapidae. This is different from the adder found in Europe. The European adder belongs to the family Viperidae. Death adders are not aggressive snakes. They do not try to run away from threats. Instead, they rely on hiding to stay safe. This can make them dangerous to people in the bush.

Death adders have a different way of having babies. Most snakes lay eggs to grow. This snake produces live young instead. A female snake has a litter in the late summer. These litters usually have between 3 and 20 babies. Sometimes, a single litter has more than 30 young. Today, these snakes face a hard job because of cane toads. Young toads eat the small snakes. Adult snakes can be poisoned by the toxic skin of the toads.
