The common death adder is a snake from Australia. It has a thick body. It has bands of red, brown, and black. Its belly can be grey, cream, or pink.

This snake is a master of camouflage. This means it is very good at hiding. It hides under leaves and debris. This helps it blend into the ground.

Most snakes search for food. This snake is different. It sits in one place and waits. It stays coiled in an ambush. An ambush is a surprise attack. It wiggles its tail to look like a grub. Small animals come to look at the tail. Then the snake strikes. It uses venom to catch its meal.

Death adders eat birds, lizards, and small mammals. Most snakes lay eggs. But this snake has live young. A female can have a litter of 3 to 20 babies. Some litters have over 30.

These snakes face a new threat. Cane toads are moving into their homes. Young toads eat the small snakes. Adult snakes can also be poisoned by the toads. This is because toads have toxic skin.
