It is native to South and Central America. People often call it the giant neotropical toad or the marine toad. It belongs to a group of animals called the genus Rhinella. This toad matters because it can change the places where it lives. It is now found in many parts of Oceania and the Caribbean. It is also found in Northern Australia.

Life for a cane toad starts in the water as an egg.

A female lays a single clump of thousands of eggs. These eggs are black and covered in a jelly membrane. The eggs hatch into small, black tadpoles within a few days. These tadpoles live at the bottom of the water in groups. They grow into tiny toadlets in about four weeks. Most young toads do not survive to become adults. Only about 0.5% of them reach full size. This is because they face hard jobs like being eaten by siblings.

Carl Linnaeus described the cane toad in his 1758 work, Systema Naturae. He used the name marina because of an old drawing. A scientist named Albertus Seba thought the toad lived in the sea. This was a mistake, but the name stuck. Later, the toad was brought to other lands to help farmers. It was used to control the cane beetle. This beetle eats sugar cane, which is a plant used for sugar. Now, the toad is often called an invasive pest in those places.

There are many interesting facts about how these toads live.

An adult female is much longer than a male. They can live for 10 to 15 years in the wild. One toad even lived for 35 years in captivity! Their skin is dry and has many warts. They have large parotoid glands behind their eyes. These glands make a milky fluid called bufotoxin. This fluid is a poison that can harm many animals. This includes dogs and even some birds.

Cane toads are very good at finding food to eat. They use their eyes to see movement. They also use their sense of smell to find things. They have a very large diet for a toad. They eat bugs like ants, beetles, and dragonflies. They also eat small mammals, birds, and even bats. Some toads will even eat pet food or household trash. This ability to eat almost anything helps them live in new places. They can even survive in places that are not very tropical. They can handle losing a lot of water in their bodies.
