He was born in 1933 in Algeria. His family came from Tangier. Later, they moved to Tunisia and then to Algeria. Claude went to Paris to study science. He worked hard to learn about how light and atoms work together.

Claude is best known for laser cooling. This is a way to make atoms very cold. He used laser light to cool and trap atoms. He showed how to cool them even more than others thought possible. This big discovery won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997. He shared this prize with Steven Chu and William Daniel Phillips.

Claude has taught many students in Paris. He also taught at schools in the United States. He wrote books to help others learn about physics.
