Arthur Ashkin was a famous scientist. He studied how light works. He worked at a place called Bell Labs for 40 years.

Ashkin invented a tool called optical tweezers. This tool uses a laser beam to move tiny things. Light has something called radiation pressure. This is a force that light can push with. He used this force to grab small parts. He could move atoms and tiny living cells. This was like a dream from a science fiction story. His work helps people study biology and physics.

In 2018, Ashkin won the Nobel Prize in Physics. This is a very big prize for scientists. He was 96 years old when he won it. For a time, he was the oldest person to win.

Ashkin was born in Brooklyn, New York. His parents came from Ukraine. He went to school at Columbia University and Cornell University. He even worked with military radar systems. He held 47 patents for his many ideas. He lived in New Jersey later in his life. He died in 2020 at age 98.
