He was born in 1902. He lived in France and Germany. Kastler studied how light hits atoms. Atoms are the tiny bits that make up everything.

He found a way to use light to study atoms. He called this optical pumping. This method helped scientists see how atoms work. His work helped make lasers and masers. A maser is a tool that uses light or radio waves.

In 1966, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. This is a very big prize for science. He also worked with a man named Jean Brossel. Together, they studied spectroscopy. Spectroscopy is the study of how light and matter interact.

Kastler was a teacher for a long time. He led a group of young scientists in Paris. Many of his students also won Nobel Prizes. Outside of science, he wrote poems in German. He also helped a group called Action Against Hunger. He died in France in 1984. [Caption: Professor Kastler in 1967.]
