He was a physicist who studied how light and atoms work together. This work is very important for modern science. His discoveries helped scientists understand the tiny building blocks of our world. Because of his hard work, we now have tools like lasers. He was a leader in his field for many years.

Kastler found a special way to study atoms using light. He developed a technique called optical pumping. This method uses light to move atoms into certain states. He combined this with magnetic resonance to see how atoms react. This process helped create the theory for lasers and masers. A maser is a tool that uses light or radio waves.

Kastler was born in Guebwiller in 1902. At that time, his home was part of the German Empire. Later, he became a French citizen after World War I. He studied at the Lycée Bartholdi in Colmar. Then he went to the École Normale Supérieure in Paris in 1921. He taught physics in Mulhouse and at the University of Bordeaux. He eventually returned to the École Normale Supérieure in 1952.

His career was full of many big honors. In 1962, he won the C.E.K Mees Medal. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1966. This prize was for his work with light and atoms. In 1976, he joined the American Philosophical Society. He also received the Wilhelm Exner Medal in 1979. His research group in Paris trained many famous scientists. Some of his students, like Claude Cohen Tannoudji, also won Nobel Prizes.

Kastler was a man with many different interests. He was not just a scientist. He also wrote poetry in the German language. He even helped lead an organization called Action Against Hunger. He cared about the world and people in it. He signed an agreement to help draft a world constitution. He died in Bandol, France, on January 7, 1984.
