He studies very tiny things. He works at a place called NIST. This is a lab for science and measurement. Wineland was born in 1944 in Wisconsin. He grew up in California. He studied at many great schools. He earned his highest degree at Harvard University.

Wineland does amazing work with light. In 1978, he was the first to use lasers to cool ions. Ions are tiny parts of an atom that have a charge. Cooling them helps scientists study them better. He also used ions for quantum computing. Quantum computing is a new way to use tiny systems to find answers.

In 2005, he made a very precise atomic clock. It used just one aluminum ion. This work helped make better clocks and better tools. For his great work, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He shared this big prize in 2012. He won it for his ways to measure tiny systems. He has won many other awards too. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
