A physicist is a scientist who studies how the world works. He is best known for his work with atoms. Atoms are the tiny parts that make up everything.

Chu found a way to cool and trap atoms. He used laser light to do this. He used six laser beams to cool them. The beams worked in pairs from three directions. This helped him study atoms with great accuracy. This work won him the Nobel Prize in 1997.
