She was a great piano player. She was also the first woman to lead a group of musicians in her country. Chiquinha wrote many kinds of songs. She wrote waltzes and polkas. She even wrote the very first march for Carnival. This song was called "Ó Abre Alas."

Her music was part of a style called choro. She was the first woman to play in a choro group. People loved her plays and shows too. One show, called "Forrobodó," ran for 1,500 shows!

Chiquinha's music was special because it sounded like the people of Brazil. She played the piano in many ways. In 1877, she made up a polka called "Atraente" while playing at a choro meeting. This was a way to make the piano fit popular tastes. She also wrote beautiful waltzes like "Walkyria" in 1884. Later, she wrote many shows for the theater. Her operetta "A Corte na Roça" came out in 1885. These songs and plays helped make her a very famous composer.

Chiquinha was born in Rio de Janeiro on October 17, 1847. Her father was a wealthy man who became a marshal. Her mother was a poor woman from a different background. Chiquinha learned to read, write, and play the piano as a young girl. At age 11, she wrote her first song for Christmas. It was called "Canção dos Pastores." Even though her father was strict, music became her whole life. She worked hard to become a professional musician.

Her life had many difficult moments and big changes.

She married a man named Jacinto at age 16. This was an arranged marriage that she did not want. Later, she left him to follow her music career. This was a huge scandal in Brazil at that time. She also had a long love with a musician named João Batista Fernandes Lage. To avoid trouble, she adopted him as her son. They even moved to Lisbon, Portugal, for a while to live together.

Chiquinha did much more than just play music. She was a very active citizen in her country. She supported the end of slavery and the start of the Republic. She also worked to help women get the right to vote. In 1917, she helped start a group to protect artists' work. This group made sure people could not use songs without permission. Today, Brazil celebrates her on October 17. This is now the National Day of Brazilian Popular Music.
