She holds a significant place in history as the first female conductor in Brazil. Her musical influence shaped the sound of Brazilian popular culture through many different genres. She is famously recognized as the first pianist of "choro," a popular Brazilian musical style. Additionally, she composed "Ó Abre Alas" in 1899, which was the very first carnival march. Her work helped bridge the gap between formal music and the vibrant sounds of the streets.

Chiquinha's musical process often involved adapting instruments to suit local tastes. In 1877, she composed the polka "Atraente" as an improvisation during a choro meeting. This helped adjust the piano's sound to match the popular musical preferences of the time.

She was also a master of theater music, writing songs for operettas and vaudevilles. Her operetta "Forrobodó," released in 1911, became a massive success. It ran for 1,500 consecutive shows, making it one of the most successful productions of its kind in Brazil. She continued composing until the end of her life, writing her final opera, "Maria," in 1934 at age 87.

Her career included many different musical forms and styles. Throughout her life, she authored approximately 2,000 compositions. These works spanned genres such as waltzes, polkas, tangos, lundus, maxixes, and Fado. She also wrote serenades, quadrilles, and mazurkas. Her ability to write for various theatrical needs led her to compose music for 77 different theater plays. This wide variety of styles ensured her music reached many different types of audiences across Brazil.

Chiquinha's early life in Rio de Janeiro was marked by both privilege and social complexity. She was born on October 17, 1847, to a wealthy white father and a poor mestizo mother. Her father was a marshal who eventually recognized her as his daughter. As a girl in a military family, she received a formal education. This included reading, writing, and mathematics, but primarily the piano. By age 11, she had already composed her first musical work, "Canção dos Pastores," for a Christmas celebration.

Despite her talent, Chiquinha faced intense social challenges and personal struggles. At age 16, she was forced into an arranged marriage with Jacinto Ribeiro do Amaral. She eventually left him to pursue her musical career, which caused a massive scandal. This decision led her father to declare her "dead and of unpronounceable name."

Later in life, she shared a deep relationship with a younger musician, João Batista Fernandes Lage. To protect her reputation and career, she adopted him as her son. The couple even moved to Lisbon, Portugal, to live away from the social pressures of Rio de Janeiro.

Chiquinha was also a fierce advocate for the rights of artists and citizens. Because people often used her music without permission, she helped found the Brazilian Society of Theater Authors in 1917. This was the first organization in Brazil dedicated to copyrighting and protecting the work of artists. Beyond music, she was active in major social movements. She supported the abolition of slavery through the Golden Law of 1888 and the proclamation of the Republic in 1889. She also held leadership roles in the suffragist movement, which fought for women's right to vote.

Her legacy continues to be celebrated throughout Brazil today. In 2012, a law was enacted to establish the National Day of Brazilian Popular Music. This holiday is celebrated every year on October 17, her birthday. Her life has also been honored through media, including a 38-episode miniseries released in 1999. In 2018, Google released a special Doodle to commemorate her 171st birthday. Chiquinha Gonzaga remains a symbol of artistic bravery and cultural identity in Brazil.
