It divides a story or a set of facts into themes. This helps you find what you need to read. Chapters can have numbers or titles. Some books use both.

Long books often use parts to group many chapters together. Non-fiction books use chapters to help you navigate. These books often have a table of contents. This is a list that shows where chapters start.

In the past, books were different. Some old Greek texts only had numbers for chapters. A man named Jerome used the word capitulum for headings. In the fifth century, people began to divide books more often. Some old scrolls held as much text as one modern chapter.

Authors sometimes use odd numbering. One book uses the Fibonacci sequence. Another book uses only prime numbers. One story goes backwards from chapter 20 to chapter 1. Even The Lord of the Rings uses six books to group its parts. These choices make the reading experience unique.
