Catharsis

philosophy religion Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The word catharsis comes from an old Greek word. It means to clean or make pure. People use this word in many ways. In the past, it meant cleaning the body. Today, it often describes how we handle feelings.

Some people think of it as a way to clear the mind. The thinker Aristotle wrote about this. He said that music or sad plays could help. A sad play might make people feel fear or pity. After the play, those people might feel happy and new. This is like a fresh start for the soul.

Other thinkers have different ideas. Some say it helps us learn. They believe it helps us understand our world. This is called intellectual clarification. It helps us use our minds to control our big feelings.

In psychology, doctors use the term too. They use it to talk about letting out old, hidden feelings. By talking about these things, people can feel better. This helps them find peace in their lives.

Some play writers do not want this to happen. They want the audience to stay curious. They want people to take action in the real world.
