Euphemism

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A euphemism is a soft word. People use it to replace a hard or rude word. This helps them speak in a polite way.

We use these words for many reasons. Some people use them to be kind. They might say someone is "asleep" instead of "dead." This makes a sad topic feel less heavy. Others use them to be funny. You might hear someone say "oh my gosh" instead of a stronger word.

Sometimes, people use them to hide the truth. Leaders may use soft words to make bad events sound okay. For example, a war might be called a "special military operation." This can make a scary event seem small.

Words can also change over time. This is called a euphemism treadmill. A soft word might become an insult. When that happens, people find a new soft word. Long ago, people used the word "toilet." Later, they used "bathroom" to be more polite. Now, words for many things keep changing to stay kind.
