He ruled from 198 to 217 AD. His birth name was Lucius Septimius Bassianus. He was born in Lugdunum, which is now Lyon, France. His father was the emperor Septimius Severus. His mother was Empress Julia Domna.

People often call him Caracalla because of a hooded tunic he liked to wear. This nickname became very popular during his time.

His path to power started very young. His father made him a co-emperor when he was only nine years old. He had a younger brother named Geta. The two brothers were supposed to rule together after their father died in 211 AD. However, the brothers did not get along well. They even argued during a long trip from Britain back to Rome.

Eventually, Caracalla had Geta killed by the Praetorian Guard. This left Caracalla as the only ruler of the empire.

Being the sole emperor was a very big job. Caracalla found many of the daily tasks of ruling to be boring. Because of this, his mother Julia Domna helped him a lot. She helped manage the empire and answered important letters.

She was a very influential woman in the Roman government. Caracalla also focused on being a soldier. He spent much of his time training troops and planning wars. He even led a campaign against the Parthian Empire in 216 AD.

Caracalla made several major changes during his reign. In 212 AD, he issued the Edict of Caracalla. This law gave Roman citizenship to almost all free people in the empire. This was a huge change for the many people living in distant lands. He also built the Baths of Caracalla.

This was the second-largest bathing complex ever built in Rome. He even introduced a new type of money called the antoninianus.

History remembers Caracalla as a very harsh and difficult ruler. Many writers from his own time described him as a cruel tyrant. He ordered many massacres in Rome and other places. His life ended suddenly in 217 AD when a soldier assassinated him.
