Captain Ahab is a famous character from the novel Moby-Dick. He was written by Herman Melville in 1851. Ahab is the captain of a whaling ship called the Pequod. He is known for being a man with a single, intense focus. This focus is his desire for revenge against a white whale. The whale is named Moby Dick.

A previous voyage with the whale changed Ahab's life forever. During that trip, Moby Dick bit off Ahab's leg. Now, the 58-year-old captain must wear a prosthetic leg made of ivory.

There are many details about how Ahab lives and works. His ivory leg has a small, flat patch on it. He uses this patch like a slate to do math for navigation. To stay steady on the moving ship, he uses special holes in the deck. These holes match the bottom of his leg so he can balance. Ahab also has a white mark on his face and neck. This mark looks like a seam on a tree after lightning hits it. He even gives his shaving razors to the blacksmith. The blacksmith uses them to make a special harpoon for the hunt.

Melville created Ahab using ideas from many famous stories. The author was influenced by lectures about the play Hamlet. Some experts believe Ahab's leg is a nod to the myth of Oedipus. His name comes from a character in the Bible. That biblical Ahab was a wicked king. This connection helps show that the captain is a very intense person. Some people think the character might be based on Captain Charles Wilkes. Wilkes led a real expedition and was known for being cruel to his crew.

Many writers have studied Ahab's personality over the years. A biographer named Andrew Delbanco calls him a personification of fanaticism. Another scholar, F. O. Matthiessen, called him a god-like man. Some people do not feel sorry for him at all. The writer D. H. Lawrence thought the whale should have taken more than just a leg. Ahab's journey is often seen as a tragedy. He is a man whose mind is too focused on hate. This prevents him from feeling the joy of love.

Even today, Ahab is a part of our popular culture. You can find him in cartoons, comic books, and plays. He even helped inspire the character Captain Hook. In those stories, Hook is obsessed with a crocodile instead of a whale. The story of Ahab ends in a very sad way. During a three-day chase, Ahab hits Moby Dick with his harpoon. The whale dives and the line wraps around Ahab's neck. He is dragged into the sea, and the Pequod sinks too.
