His first book, Typee, was an account of his time in the Marquesas Islands. This book was very successful and helped him marry Elizabeth Shaw. He also wrote books about his life at sea called Redburn and White-Jacket. These stories were based on his time as a young man on ships. He even wrote a psychological novel called Pierre. Later in life, he focused more on writing poetry. He wrote poems about the American Civil War in books like Battle-Pieces.

Melville came from a family with a very strong history.

His grandfathers were important figures in the American Revolutionary War. His grandfather, Major Thomas Melvill, was part of the Boston Tea Party. His other grandfather, General Peter Gansevoort, defended Fort Stanwix in 1777. These connections made Melville proud of his family roots. He grew up in a large family with seven siblings. One of his brothers, Thomas, later became a governor. His mother, Maria, was a very religious and devoted woman.

Melville's life was full of both hard work and deep thought.
