He wrote novels, short stories, and essays about his own life. Miller did not follow old rules for writing books. Instead, he used a style called stream of consciousness. This method follows the natural flow of a person's thoughts. He also used surrealist free association, which is a way of connecting ideas through dreams or strange thoughts. His work blended personal stories with social criticism and deep philosophy. He wanted to show the world exactly as he saw it.

Miller's writing process often came from his real-life experiences. In 1922, during a three-week vacation, he wrote his first novel called Clipped Wings. He worked as a personnel manager at Western Union from 1920 to 1924. Later, he decided to quit his job to focus only on writing. He wrote a trilogy called The Rosy Crucifixion to describe his early struggles. This series includes a book called Sexus, which covers his time in Brooklyn. He also used his life stories to write travel memoirs and even painted beautiful watercolors.

In 1924, he married a dancer named June Mansfield. They lived in an apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn. In 1930, Miller moved to Paris, France, to live as a writer. During his ten years in France, he became very fluent in the French language. He lived at a place called Villa Seurat and met many famous authors there.

Many of Miller's most famous books faced hard times in America. His books Tropic of Cancer, Black Spring, and Tropic of Capricorn were banned in the United States. This was because they contained sexually explicit content and blunt language. Because they were banned, people often had to smuggle his books into the country. His first book published in the U.S. was a collection called The Cosmological Eye in 1939. It was not until 1961 that his most famous novels were finally allowed to be sold openly. Even while banned, his work gained a large reputation among people living abroad.

Miller's life moved from the busy streets of New York to the quiet of California. After traveling to Greece in 1939, he returned to New York in 1940. In June 1942, he moved to California and eventually settled in Big Sur. He lived in a small house on Partington Ridge from 1944 to 1947. He wrote a book called Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch about this time. His unique writing style later had a huge influence on the Beat Generation. One famous writer in that group, Jack Kerouac, was a fan of Miller's work.
