Campanulaceae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The bellflower family is a big group of plants. It has nearly 2400 different species. These plants can be small shrubs or even tiny trees. Some grow in dry deserts. Others live in wet rainforests. Some even grow in the cold Arctic.

Many of these plants have a milky sap. This is a white liquid inside them. Some plants are used as food. Others are used as medicine. Most flowers in this group are blue. You might also see red, pink, or yellow flowers. Some are very small. Others can be 15 cm wide.

Animals help these plants make seeds. This is called pollination. Bees and birds often visit the flowers. Some flowers are shaped like tubes. These use a pollen pump. This is a way to push pollen out to visitors. The pollen moves up a tube to reach birds or insects. This helps the plant grow more.
