Campanulaceae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Campanulaceae family is a huge group of plants. It includes nearly 2400 different species. These plants can be small herbs or shrubs. Some can even grow into small trees. Many of them have a milky sap inside. You might find them in your own garden. Some are known as bellflowers or balloonflowers. People even eat some species as vegetables. Others are used as medicinal plants.

These plants live in almost every place on Earth. They grow on every continent except Antarctica. Some live on remote islands in the ocean. Hawaii is a very special place for them. Over 100 different types grow there. You can find them in hot deserts. They also live in wet rainforests. Some even grow in the cold Arctic. They can live on sea cliffs or high mountains.

Flowers in this family come in many shapes. Some look like bells or stars. Others are shaped like long tubes. Most flowers are a shade of blue. You might also see red, pink, or yellow. Some flowers are tiny. Others can be 15 cm wide. The petals are often joined together. This creates a shape called a corolla. The number of petals is usually between 3 and 8.

Many plants use a clever pollen pump. This helps them move pollen to animals. In the Lobelioideae group, pollen stays in a tube. The style is a part of the flower. As the style grows, it pushes the pollen up. This pushes the pollen out to visitors. Bees and birds are common visitors. Hummingbirds and honeycreepers love these flowers. Some even use moths or lizards.

Scientists study these plants to learn their history. The oldest pollen comes from the Oligocene period. Some very old seeds were found in Poland. These seeds are about 16 or 17 million years old. They belong to a plant called Campanula paleopyramidalis. This plant is a relative of flowers we see today. Some plants also store energy as inulin. This is a type of sugar.
