The Convolvulaceae family is a large group of flowering plants.

People often call them morning glories or bindweeds. This family contains more than 1,650 different species. Most of these plants are herbaceous vines.

However, the family also includes shrubs and small herbs. Some species can even grow into medium-sized trees. These plants matter because they provide food and beauty to the world.

Many of these plants have a very specific way they grow. Their stems are usually winding or twisting. This is why their Latin name comes from the word *convolvere*, which means "to wind."

Their flowers have a unique shape called a corolla. This corolla is funnel-shaped and looks the same from all sides. The flowers have five fused petals and five sepals at the base. Inside, they have five stamens that are attached to the petals. The fruit can be a berry, a nut, or a capsule.

Scientists have studied how some of these plants work with fungi. Some species contain special chemicals called ergoline alkaloids.

These chemicals likely come from a special partnership called symbiosis. In this relationship, a fungus lives on the plant. A recent study looked at the plant *Ipomoea asarifolia*. Researchers used DNA sequencing to find a specific fungus on it. This fungus belongs to the family Clavicipitaceae. It is passed from one generation to the next through seeds.

There are many important names and numbers in this plant family. The family includes about 60 different genera.

One famous member is the sweet potato, which is a type of edible tuber. Another useful plant is water spinach, which people use for food. Some members, like the genus *Cuscuta*, are known as dodder. Dodder is a parasite that lives on other plants. In these parasitic plants, the leaves are reduced to tiny scales.

You might recognize these plants in your own life. You may see morning glories growing in a garden.

You might also see bindweed as a troublesome weed in a yard. Some people even use certain species for medicine. While some are helpful, others like dodder can be quite tricky. Whether they are food, flowers, or weeds, these plants are all part of one big family.
